We are conducting an epidemiologic space-time study of youths’ activities and their safety before, during, and after school. Over a period of 18 months, we are enrolling youth between the ages of 12 and 18 years to participate. These are youth who were injured as a result of violence that occurred at school or during school activities, and required treatment at a hospital emergency department for their injuries. The hospitals from which youth are being enrolled are The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and Presbyterian Hospital. The goal of the study is to identify contextual factors at schools and around school property that pose risks for or protect against school violence, and understand how intervening on these factors may help make schools and neighborhoods safer.
